International Journal of Assessment Tools in Education https://www.ijate.net/index.php/ijate
Call for Papers for the Special Issue - 2023
Educational Measurement and Evaluation: Lessons from the Past, Visions for the Future

Dr. Okan BULUT (Editor of the Special Issue)
University of Alberta, Canada

Over the last few decades, the landscape of educational measurement and evaluation has undergone significant changes with the rise of digital assessment tools (e.g., computer-based or computerized adaptive tests, game-based assessments, and essay scoring systems). Digital assessment tools have revolutionized how complex learning outcomes can be measured while enabling educators to address the unique needs of individual learners more efficiently. By leveraging these cutting-edge technologies, researchers and practitioners can now use more sophisticated statistical methods that can provide deeper insights into learners’ performance, strengths, and weaknesses. These computational methods have great potential to improve our understanding of human cognition, but they require researchers and practitioners to rethink important concepts like reliability, validity, and fairness. Therefore, it is evident that more research is necessary to determine how to apply the principles of educational measurement to the latest technological advancements, including machine learning, artificial intelligence, large-language models, and big data analytics.

We are asking researchers to contribute to this special issue by discussing the evolution of educational measurement and evaluation concepts and their vision for the future of these concepts. We welcome submissions of empirical research or theoretical work, such as position papers and systematic/scoping reviews, on the core concepts and processes of educational measurement and evaluation. The publication of this special issue will be on October 29, 2023 to honor the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. We expect this special issue to bring new perspectives to science both in local and global contexts.

The topics we are interested in including, but are not limited to:

• Historical evolution and future of fundamental concepts such as validity and reliability
• Innovative assessment methods and tools (e.g., adaptive tests, intelligent tutoring systems and high order thinking skills)
• Modern test development tools (e.g., automatic item generation)
• Applications of computational psychometrics
• Learning analytics and data-driven decision-making in the classroom
• Applications of natural language processing in assessment (e.g., automated essay scoring)
• Frameworks for analyzing complex data (e.g., process data) from digital assessments
• Virtual/augmented reality and gamification in educational assessments
• Challenges of ethics, bias, and fairness related to advanced technologies (e.g., ChatGPT)
• Testing irregularities such as cheating, item pre-knowledge, and breaches of test security

We look forward to your submissions and welcome you sharing this announcement with interested colleagues, students and practitioners.

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically through the https://dergipark.org.tr/tr/pub/ijate

Authors must indicate in their cover letter that their paper should be considered for this call by September 2023.

Manuscripts are invited between May 07st 2023 and September 30st 2023, with the goal of publishing the Special Issue on October 29, 2023.

All submissions will undergo normal peer-review.

For questions regarding this special issue, please contact: Dr. N. Tugce Simsek, Kocaeli University, ijate.info@gmail.com

--

In recent years, there have been many significant developments in the field of education and scientific evaluation. We will begin to see the effects of today's Covid-19 pandemic on education in the coming years. In particular, we will witness the change of assessing quality and standards as well as the evaluation and assessment modes currently used in education. We foresee that these changes will have profound effects on students, institutions, academics, and the education system as a whole.

IJATE, as an important venue for scientific studies in education, is committed to ensuring novel ideas and studies that meet the general criteria of significance and scientific excellence in both practice and theory are presented and disseminated. The journal will continue to publish such significant studies for the good of the academic community and those interested in the related fields of education.

Note: International Journal of Assessment Tools in Education (IJATE) has two submission system and both of them are valid. You can submit your manuscript through this webpage or Dergipark Journal System according to your familarity to these systems.

As of 2021 (Vol 8.
